Is The Good Shepherd Humane Society a no-kill agency?

A. It depends on how you define "no-kill". We only euthanize an animal for two reasons: (1) an animal is agressive, poses a threat to other animals at our shelter or foster home, and no other agency will take him/her; (2) an animal requires medical care that is beyond our resources and no other agency will take him/her.

How can I see your animals that are up for adoption?

A. We show our cats 7 days a week in Peachtree City at Petco, located at the corner of GA Highway 74 and Peachtree Parkway. We also show our dogs there on the first and third Saturday of every month. Please stop by to see us. Additionally, we show our dogs in Newnan at Petsmart located on 1072 Bullsboro Drive (Highway 34) just before the I-85 (exit #47) on most Sundays. To verify if we are there, please call Wendy at (678) 265 - 0438. If you are interested in a particular dog, please call us, and we will be happy to work with you.

From where do you get your animals?

A. We mainly get our animals from calls from the public. Reasons for giving up animals include: allergies, divorce, marriage, having a baby, getting a job, losing a job, moving, parents moving in, retiring, going into a nursing home, unplanned litters, animal agression, barking, chewing, digging (dogs), inappropriate elimination (cats), scratching. Other people find strays they cannot keep. Depending on the laws of their county, we take them after the required waiting period. We also take in animals from shelters, veterinarians, and other agencies. However, we can only take in an animal IF WE HAVE AVAILABLE SPACE OR AN AVAILABLE FOSTER HOME AND AVAILABLE FINANCES TO DO SO. We work within our resources.

Q. How does The Good Shepherd promote humane education?

A. We talk to Girls Scout troups seeking to earn their Animal Care badges. We also talk to any other groups upon request. Because we believe that education, coupled with legislation, is the only way to protect animals, we are attempting to provide every K-6 child in Fayette and Coweta Counties with a subscription to Kind Kid News. Please see our Kind Kid News button for more details.

Do you need any volunteers?

A. YES! We always need people to help us with our mission of helping animals. People who are at least 14 years of age, enjoy working with animals, and are dependable are welcome to help with our animals at Petco in Peachtree City, GA or with our animals at Petsmart in Newnan, GA. Individuals seeking to perform community service for non-viiolent offenses may also work with our animals.
